Affirmative action in higher education, THOMAS E. WEISSKOPF

web resource

Affirmative action comes in a variety of forms, but for present purposes I define it as positive discrimination – i.e., the provision of some amount of preference in processes of selection to desirable positions in a society to members of groups that are under-represented in those positions. The preference may be provided in various ways – e.g., reserved seats in separate competitions or preferential boosts in a single competition – but it always has the effect of increasing the number of members of an under-represented group selected to a desirable position.

As soon as the interviews began, it became clear that the committee had been rigged. Two out of the three experts were apparently handpicked by someone in the vice chancellor’s office who was acting on behalf of the riggers. The vice chancellor himself had far too much on his hands to look carefully at the names of the people who were available to serve as experts that evening. All the procedures had been properly followed; nothing could now be done to prevent the impending subversion of the system of selection.

The past quarter century has seen a massive expansion in higher education worldwide and especially in developing countries. Tertiary education is a rapidly growing service sector enrolling more than 80 million students worldwide and employing about 3.5 million people. Demand pressures have been acute, the result of a population bulge in the relevant age group, increasing enrolment in secondary education, increasing incomes (and with it the capacity to pay), and rising wage premiums accruing from higher education.

freedom of coice in education

blog

As far as i know myself, I am not analyst of the present trends in economics but to be true i am not depart from that. so, it is my utter sense of responsibility to keep my view regarding freedom of choices in education. I believe that one should get what he/ she wants not narcissitically offcourse. In education one cant be devoid of his/ her thought processes in area of his/her interests. Gone are the days when people inhibit their interest for the sake of their family as it was not the fashion in those old trends.
