it won't cost you much...chose to be PRESENT to "PRESENT SIR"!

forum topic
Embed video:

when i saw this video it seemed to me a very interesting piece because it is depicting the reality of the present state of education in most of the schools of our contry.

and last day when my fren sree(who is working with KATHA) called to seek some help regarding the project she is associted with...it emerged to me that she was talking about the same concerns as shown in the video. KATHA, in one of its projects works in collaboration with MCD schools to upgrade the quality of teaching in the government schools.

we talked over "N" number of things which i can go on talking about but cutting on all that to save some space here...i just want to share that the crux of our talk was "WAYS IN WHICH WE CAN UPGRADE QUALITY OF EDUCATION IN SCHOOLS"...while we talked it also emerged that one the reasons effecting quality of education was the lack of motivation and excitement on the part of teachers to their teaching practice..
CAN IT BE ENSURED THAT "TEACHING DOESN'T BECOME A MUNDANE JOB BUT RATHER EXCITES TEACHERS?"

Hmm...
i told her about USRN's teacher fellowship programme...may be researching on own practice excites teachers..may be, may be not!

let us try..
but it is to request you all to put you grey cells at work and provide suggestions on the issues raised here in this forum for it concerns us all...
i assure you that your suggestions would not just remain at the portal level but would reach out to others who are working towards the better tomorrow..
hope my call awakens you all...
hope to hear from you all...

Hey.... thc viedo was

Hey.... thc viedo was amazing i can say.As soon as i read the word 'present sir',some thing funny clicks in my mind.
Ya, this is the reality in our primary schools. And this thing hurts so much that there are some teachers, who are not at all sensitive towards their profession.I had done my b.el.ed and like all other interns,i also did my internship in a M.C primary school. when i saw teachers there who were of my age,and were doing the same thing which was depicted above in the viedo,i was very dishearted. The only thing we can do is to sensitse the teachers specially the young teachers towards their profession. and i think that this thing should be inherent in you when you joins this profession that you have to be true with this work....

I do not blame teachers for

I do not blame teachers for being this way because for them that is the way to be. It is something that they have learnt over the years from the system and therefore, see no hope at the end of the tunnel. They want to contribute no more than the minimum. They continue to let these children be left to their destiny; the destiny of earning a minimum livelihood, and nothing more. They are oblivious to the possibilities that these children have talent and that it has to be recognized and nurtured.

What lacks in the system is accountability. But accountability (alone) also cannot be imposed on those teachers. I have full empathy for them because they do not know a better way to impart their duties.

I want to suggest something which would require a lot of work – a lot of work from those who design the curriculum for these schools. From those who have best intentions for these students at the core of their heart. Who are eager to put down their best ideas and consider the context of these children, in designing the curriculum for them. The experts who want to reform ‘the education system’ at the grass root level.

Some of the best schools in the country - what they do is that before the start of next session, they take an account of each and every working day from the calendar. They create a comprehensive day by day syllabus for the entire year. (There is a dedicated team for this and teachers are not burdened with this job). The structure of each day is constructed by curriculum designer (a teacher’s job is only to effectively implement those structures).

They consider the subjects to be covered. They consider the concepts that are mandate to be passed on. They consider the inter dependence of concepts and thereafter create an integrated lesson plan for ‘each day’ of the year. They make space for poetry, song, dance, arts. They consider the context of children; they consider their age; they consider that they may not have solid foundation (because they are products of the system so far) and it is not their fault! (They are compassionate and experts.)

And also that there is flexibility for the children and flexibility enough that the teachers do not feel intimidated. (provide for choice and options within the structures, and space for last minute changes)

There is lot of hardwork that is required to be put into ‘creating’ these structures.

Then, there is orientation required for these teachers who will implement these structures. There is ‘emotional connection’ that needs to be established with them to make them partners in implementing these structures. ‘Importance’ be given to them for what they will do.

And last of all there is accountability required to ensure that these structures are being implement day after day, week after week.

This responsibility can be taken by the Heads of these schools; because they will know the week by week structure of each class; because they will know what the teachers are expected on a particular day or in a particular week.

These ready made structures if given to teachers – would make their job more structured; would make accountability more concrete.

It is not their fault that they do not know what to teach, how to teach and what value would it have in teaching to these children. They are the products of age old system. We cannot blame them but only make them partners in creating a vision with them, and also recognizing their effort in doing so.

Why do we not bring this effective sophistication for these children?

After all these children are as much importance to the nation, as the children who ultimately make it. Just that the children of advantaged backgrounds have so many people and structures to take care of them but these children of disadvantaged backgrounds are nowhere in expert hands.

(One has to show empathy for those who are also products of the system – those teachers. They cannot be blamed. Even if we implement the above what can we do about a class that has student teacher ratio of 40:1. Would they be able to implement those structures without support? If they do not have motivation, are we not supposed to provide them support that in turn motivates them? Atleast ask them what support they need?)

its just not a simple issue

its just not a simple issue which we are exploring and it can not be oversimplified by putting blames on one single stakeholder. may be we can, for the time being, only try and understand...the sheer complexities which need to be addressed...
and here i appreciate your concern that we can not simply put the blame on teachers and which i haven't either.

before beginning to write anything i would like to only make a request that anything i write here should not taken as if i am trying to find out mistakes or errors in comments written but only trying to forsee avenues for further discussions and thinking....and most importantly to try and understand...
the queries raised are not to find mistakes but to for clarifications about points which i couldnot understand..

I WANT TO ASK-
"ARE WE NOT SNATCHING AWAY THE LIBERTY OF THE TEACHERS BY MAKING THEM DANCE TO THE DICTATES OF THE SO CALLED 'EXPERTS'?"

"IF AGREED THAT THE TEACHERS' SOCIALIZATION HAS LED THEM TO THINK AND ACT IN CERTAIN WAYS THEN DO WE BELIEVE THAT DESOCIALIZATION EFFORTS CAN NOT BE PUT IN PLACE, NOT TO BLAME THEM OBVIOUSLY BUT TO PROVIDE AN ENVIRONMENT TO HELP GAIN COGNIZANCE OF REALITY AROUND?"

"IS A TEACHER'S JOB ONLY TO IMPLEMENT STRUCTURES DEVELOPED BY THE 'EXPERTS', WHY NOT MAKE THEM PARTY TO MAKING THESE SO CALLED 'EFFECTIVE STRUCTURES'?"

When i was watching this

When i was watching this clip it took me into my childhood, where my friends shared about their school system. As,I have done my schooling from a private school,so it never happened with me. But it doesn't mean that i am not aware that such kind of defects are existing in our Education system. Many of my friends and their parents used to do the complains of such problems. But they can't do anything because that was happening in the presence of the Head of the scchool. Ofcourse, in her presence a little bit controle seemed to be there.
What i feel that for controlling such kind of situation there is a need for constructing a mechanism which can make a surprise visit to the school. As it will create a pressure on the head as well as the staff members.
AND Along with the above suggestion if the school teachers will be provided some trainings troug which some interest can be generated among them. Then also the problem can be minimize upto a certain extent.
